Return of the News of Fury
Wow, it's been a while since the ol' kung fu news radar has beeped. But here are a few tidbits you might like.
Tony Jaa, star of the amazing Ong Bak, has a new film in the offing, Tom Yum Goong. Not quite stop press news, but what you might not know is that the film has been picked up for distribution in the U.S., Scandinavia, Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa by Bob and Harvey Weinstein. Yup, the former Miramax bosses and their new company will be releasing the film, so given their track record expect a 65-minute edit with all of the fight scenes removed and a new hip-hop score by the guys who did the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle song. Luckily it's still up for grabs here in the UK.
Jet Li may be about to quit martial arts movies for good, according to Chinese newspaper the Shenzhen Daily. Jet is currently working on a movie called Huo Yuenjia, about real-life kung fu expert Fok Yuen-gap (also known by the name that makes up the film's title). Fok was the master of the (fictional) character played by Jet in Fist of Legend.
"I stepped into the martial arts movie market when I was only 16. I think I have proved my ability in this field and it won't make sense for me to continue for another five or 10 years. Huo Yuanjia is a conclusion to my life as a martial arts star," said Jet. he movie is released in Asia next year.
And finally, the first review of Tsui Hark's new epic Seven Swords has appeared in the New Straits Times. Read it here - now I'm even more excited about this one!
