New York City Independent Horror Film Festival Announces Lineup

NYC's first film festival of independently-made horror flicks takes place October 25 - 27 at the Tribeca Film Center, and the organizers have just announced the fest's full lineup. It looks like a great festival, with all kinds of great horror movies and a panel of celebrity judges including Lloyd Kaufman, William Lustig, and Joe Kane (aka The Phantom of the Movies). For more information please see the festival's official web site.

Chadzilla's Shameless Self-Plug!

The short-story anthology book Eros Ex Machina, (to which writer Chad Saxelid contributed -Ed.), has been reissued in a nifty new edition (which I received yesterday) entitled Sex Machine. It is available as an exclusive from the Venus Book Club, an erotica book club. It's www.venusbookclub.com if the mature readers out there are interested. Kids, get your parents' permission! :-)

Sapphic Softcore Parody/Seduction Cinema Poster Grrl (got to ask the wife where those dang posters keep disappearing to) Misty Mundae has quite a busy production plate on her between semester table...announced titles that will feature the titular starlet are That 70's Girl (a feature length demo - huh? - is available at www.movieflix.com), Boobie-Doo (scheduled to lense this Fall season - and will that title ever actually grace a real resume?), Spiderbabe, A Beautiful Behind, as well as Seduction Cinema's Sisters, Seduction Cinema's Dracula (set to film Dec. 26, 2002 - Jan. 6, 2003), The Erotic Experiments of Dr. Jekyll, An Erotic Werewolf in London, Flesh for Olivia (a semi-sequel to Silk Stocking Strangler), and The Seduction of Misty Mundae. The young lady's writing/directing debut is titled Confessions of a Natural Girl. More word on these assorted films as they develop, or as the video is edited as the case might be.

Anthony Hopkins as Jor-El? Well Cinescape wants the rumors confirmed (and Hopkins has hinted that the part in the Brett Ratner-directed Superman movie is his), anybody out there in the know please let them know and as soon as they know I'll know and I'll tell you it's certain and then we'll all know and SOMEONE WILL BE HAPPY, dagnabit!

Phoenix Pictures is helping to produce a different kind of Dracula movie, The Last Voyage of the Demeter tells the tale of the horrible fate of the ship that carried Dracula to London. Bragi Schut wrote the script, but will he brag about it later?

$la$her$ is the latest release from Fangoria Pictures, the sick little game show satire/horror flick as it's own website at www.slashersthemovie.com. Check it out, if you dare.

Tremors the TV series is filming! Joining star Michael (Burt) Gross are Victor Brown, Gladys Jimenez, Lela Lee, Marcia Strassman, Dean Norris, and the albino grabboid known as "El Blanco". Some of you will be thrilled to know that other Nevada-based monsters will be making appearances as well.

Michael (Transgression) DiPaolo has wrapped his 'zombie revenge drama' entitled Daddy. DiPaolo basis his movies on confessions videotaped during his stint working at the Brooklyn District Attorney's Office. You can get the skinny in Fangoria's news section or at the man's website. http://www.contrition.net/chiaroscuro/.

Anyone remember The Last Broadcast? Anyone? No, Chris and Scott, who reviewed the movie, DO NOT count. Well The 13th Child: Legend of the Jersey Devil Volume 1 from Compression Films and Painted Zebra Productions has a group of investigators tracking the legendary beastie through the Pine Barrens. This one at least as a cast Cliff Robertson (who co-scripted with DEATH BITE co-author Michael Maryk - Death Bite was the nifty killer snake book the gnarly killer snake movie Spasms was unfaithfully based upon), Lesley-Anne Down, Robert Guillaume, Christopher Atkins. Region (i.e. New Jersey) specific theater bookings are scheduled for October 25th with wider distribution planned for 2003.

Good morning, Mr. & Mrs. Fanboy and all the geeks at sea . . . let’s go to press!

It seems the theme of today’s reports is comic books and television and so we begin today’s report with yet more comics to films. Even the CHUD site was bored when hyping Marvel’s latest yawn-inducing big screen prospects based on Sub-Mariner and Prime. I wasn’t even aware the latter of the two was a Marvel character. Marvel’s Avi Arad is quoted as saying, "Sub-Mariner will be an epic underwater tale of majestic fantasy. Prime is a complete departure from the standard super hero story. With this film we are developing what we think will be Marvel's first super hero action-comedy." Pardon me while I don’t give a damn! I understand X-MEN and SPIDER-MAN made obscene amounts of money, but that doesn’t mean every comic book character deserves their own flick. You know what I want? I want Marvel to announce live-action films based on Peter Porker, The Spectacular Spider-Ham and Speedball. Those are the two flicks I wanna see.

The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis: The Movie? Guess what the latest classic television series to have its feature film rights scooped up is? CHUD says it is true although I will still choose to deny it. Somewhere out there, DJ Qualls is probably already growing a goatee.

Sad news, bad movie fans. Paramount has officially moved the release date of their upcoming apocalyptic Irwin Allen homage, THE CORE, from November 1, 2002 to sometime next year. For those of you unaware of this film, the plot centers on a group of misfit scientists who must drill to the center of the Earth in order to jump-start the planet’s suddenly inactive core. For a taste of the stupidity, feel free to read for yourself how THE CORE’s director insults the plausibility of Jules Verne’s fantasy adventure, Journey To The Center Of The Earth, and then gleefully compares his film to Michael Bay’s headache inducing ARMAGEDDON.

Dark Horizons has some info on Jean Claude Van Damme’s next two flicks, but since neither one of them is ABOMINABLE, I’m not going to bother. When I hear that cameras are ready to roll and the “Muscles From Brussels” is ready to start kickboxing the Yeti, then I’ll be happy about the latest in Van Dammage.

Moviehole reports that Aussie rockers AC/DC will be the focus of the upcoming “road picture” entitled THUNDERSTRUCK after one of the band’s more popular tunes. The movie, which is being co-produced by an Australian record company and Mel Gibson’s “Icon” production company, will be a "a cross-country road movie set in the Australian outback with a strong emphasis on the soundtrack" and based around the hard rockers 1991 Sydney concert. Why does this just not interest me in the slightest?

Speaking of musical horrors, Dark Horizons reports that “From Justin To Kelly” is the proposed title for the big screen movie based on Fox’s hit reality game show American Idol, which is set to star (DUH!) American Idol’s finalists Justin and Kelly. What a terrible title for a potentially terrible movie! Let me say it again, just because they can sing doesn’t mean they can act! I suspect this movie will be as good as the Happy Days’ spin-off, Joanie Loves Chachi. Part of me actually kinda hopes the movie gets made because I smell a modern day CAN’T STOP THE MUSIC with disco replaced by American Idol’s brand of, as I call it, power wailing.

I liked ROMY & MICHELLE’S HIGH SCHOOL REUNION. IN fact, I liked it so much it pains me to report that ABC is planning a TV prequel called ROMY & MICHELLE: BEHIND THE VELVET ROPE to star Katherine Heigl and Alex Breckenridge in the roles originally played by Mira Sorvino and Lisa Kudrow. The prequel will detail how Romy & Michelle met and their descent to the darkside of The Force. Whoops, wrong prequel!

Also on the movie to television front, Showtime and Clive Barker are developing a series based on THE LORD OF ILLUSIONS, USA Network is developing a series based on Ah-Nuld’s stinker ERASER, and filming has begun on The Sci-Fi Channel’s TREMORS series. Now if only someone would make a TV series based on I COME IN PEACE then my life would be complete.

Finally, Cartoon Network and WB Kids have announced they are joining forces to produce an animated series based on DC Comics’ New Teen Titans to debut sometime late 2003. DAMMIT!!! This kills my dream of ever seeing a big-screen, live-action New Teen Titans film directed by Larry (KIDS, BULLY, TEENAGE CAVEMAN) Clark! Now I’m in a bad mood! No more news for today!

E! Online reported last week that filming begins in February on the big screen adaptation of the 70s TV series STARSKY & HUTCH, which is set to star Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson in the title roles. Rumor has it that this film will be done in much the same style as the CHARLIE’S ANGELS movie. So in other words, total crap? For some reason, I just can’t excited about this film.

Peter Fonda’s "Wyatt 'Captain America' Earp is still alive and has been falsely imprisoned for the murder of Jack Nicholson’s George Hanson. After being proven innocent and freed from prison, he once again sets out on a journey to try and find America. This is the bare bones synopsis of EASY RIDER A.D. and, yes, it really is being made. One of the producers of FREDDY GOT FINGERED is producing this much unwanted sequel to 1969’s classic EASY RIDER. Whew! This easily ranks as one of the single worst ideas ever! What’s next? MIDNIGHT COWBOY A.D.? TAXI DRIVER 2000? Production begins on the end of Peter Fonda’s career in the spring of 2003.

MTV has announced that the modern day Hope & Crosby of pot comedies, Method Man & Redman, will once again co-star in a film to be produced by, surprise, MTV. The rapping stoners will star in a yet-to-be-titled comedy, which will have them join the armed forces. Oh boy, Pauley Shore’s IN THE ARMY NOW meets HOW HIGH! I can’t wait to not see this movie!

Variety reports that director Antoine (TRAINING DAY) Fuqua is in talks with Paramount to helm The Jacket, a sci-fi movie about a falsely imprisoned man who learns how to see into the future and tries to change his fate. Excuse me, but didn’t I just see this movie 3 months ago when it was called MINORITY REPORT?

Fangoria reports THE SCORPION KING’s love interest, Kelly Hu, has signed to star in the big screen adaptation of Chaos! Comics’ JADE. In it, the lovely Miss Hu will play a vampire sorceress who is trying to unite the Triad mob families and restore honor to the Chinese underworld. If the film is anything like the comic, expect plenty of gore and cleavage and a vast shortage of actual good guys. Ronny Yu, who as we speak is currently directing FREDDY VS. JASON, is set to direct. Ironically, Chaos! Comics, whose other properties include Evil Ernie and Lady Death (which itself is currently being made into a full-length anime movie), filed for bankruptcy last month. Hopefully, this movie will be better than the last film that was entitled JADE.

Speaking of comic book movies starring a babe, the ex-Dark Angel Jessica Alba will star as the lead in the feature film based on the comic BEAUTIFUL KILLER. Never heard of it? Me neither. As a matter of fact, only one issue has been published so far and word of mouth is that it sucks. Creature Corner reports that the studio is planning to change the name and make the plot more along the lines of LA FEMME NIKITA thus begging the question, why bother to buy the rights to something in the first place only to change the name and the concept behind it? That’s Hollywood for you! Next up for Alba though is HONEY, in which she plays an inner city woman who brings dancing to the troubled neighborhood kids thus enriching their lives and saving them from the problems of poverty, drugs, and crime or some other crap like that.

Have you been sitting on your duff anxiously awaiting the next movie in the CROW franchise? No? Didn’t think so. No matter, THE CROW: WICKED PRAYER begins shooting this February. The funny thing is who has been cast in the title role this time around. You ready? Edward Furlong! You remember him as the young John Connor in TERMINATOR 2 who won’t be playing him in the upcoming TERMINATOR 3 because producers were seriously concerned about his ongoing drug problem. Hey, if the current National Enquirer story about Furlong blowing a million dollars on drugs the last few years is true, maybe he won’t actually need any make-up to play the role. None the less, Furlong just seems hopelessly miscast as THE CROW. I predict a swift direct-to-video death for this one too.

Moviehole is reporting that MAD MAX 4 is officially “a go” and that filming is set to begin Down Under in March. No other details are available other than that ROAD WARRIOR and BABE director George Miller will be at the helm.

I don’t know if this movie will be any good, but I must admit I love the title. THEY CALL ME BIGFOOT is the title of an upcoming low budget comedy about feuding Bigfoot hunters. Check Coming Soon for more details.

Finally today, THE EROTIC ADVENTURES OF DR. JECKYLL AND MISTRESS HYDE is now in post-production with a video release date yet to be announced. Chadzilla’s wet dream, Misty Mundae, plays a female psychologist who develops a serum that can turn ordinary women into uninhibited, lust-filled versions of themselves. Something tells me this flick will be more “top heavy” than “plot heavy.” (Insert rimshot here)
